K-Town Old Fashioned

This cocktail is ever so slightly adapted from a recipe shared by a friend who no longer drinks, but who used to enjoy a good brown liquor cocktail. The drink relies on strong brewed Korean barley tea as its base, along with bourbon-caramel flavored syrup and traditional Old Fashioned garnishes.

Thoughts on this cocktail? It’s quite interesting. It won’t fool anyone into thinking it’s made with bourbon, but it has an earthy funkiness that’s quite pleasant. It’s a tad sweet for me, but that’s easily fixable by using a bit less of the syrups.

K-Town Old Fashioned

  • 1 orange slice
  • 1 1/2 oz. strong brewed Korean barley tea (steep tea bag for 20 min)
  • 1/2 oz. Torani Bourbon Caramel syrup
  • 1/4 oz. maraschino cherry syrup
  • 3 dashes orange bitters
  • Club soda
  • Orange slice and maraschino cherry for garnish

Muddle the orange slice in a cocktail shaker. Add tea, bourbon caramel syrup, cherry syrup, and bitters. Add ice and shake until cold. Strain into an old fashioned glass with rocks. Top with a splash of club soda and garnish with orange slice and cherry.

  1. I was having an old fashioned recently and really wanted to find a soft version. Thanks for this. Not being an experienced drinker, I’m still looking for the mocktail I used to get at Source restaurant SOMA. It was sort of like an old fashioned but less sweet, more like some martinis. Seemed like a brown liquor facsimile. Any idea? I’ll go look for their menu in case they have restaurants open. It was called a Cosmic Braintrip or something.
